Zucchini Misconceptions

Kristin utilized a massive zucchini to shape the learning for her students while communicating their learning with their parents. The idea stemmed from the mis-conception of a number of students had that the zucchini was an animal.  Kristin decided to take a cross curricular approach to dispelling the conception.  Her students discussed the question “What is a Plant?” in a knowledge building circle while recording their ideas as a group and then students documented their revised understanding individually.  They then used the zucchini to make soup and graphed whether they liked the results or not. She emphasized communication, critical thinking, social responsibility and personal awareness all the while communicating learning through Fresh Grade.
